Wanting to get serious about this, this year - am taking a place in the ride london at the end of july.

Am on the look out for advice on a bike computer and / or a decent app (android) that will record / show info on training runs......

As others have said, you won't go wrong with a 500 and Strava. I'd advise getting an "out in front" mount for it as well so you're not constantly having to look down at your stem to see the thing.

There are some simple training plans on the BHF site for tackling your first big event - https://www.bhf.org.uk/get-involved/events/training-zone/cycling-training-zone/cycling-training-schedule

Sounds good. I did the 100 last summer and it was just brilliant, Also quite pleased with my time.

I ride a lot, member of a club etc. I've got the Garmin 520 and am on Strava. Defintely helps keep my motivation up and very easy to use.

Wattbike classes are also excellent if you can't get out on the road, particularly during the winter.

Anything I can help with, let me know.

Thanks all

Have signed up for an Evan ride on the 17th and will trial the garmin 500.

I know what you mean Lowlife but I can be a geek for stats /readouts etc.

Here's to a (very) mobile 2016..............

I have the Garmin 500..top piece of kit. You can upload the data into their website etc...shows a map of your route, inclines, avg speed, cadence etc..highly recommended.

Good luck on the ride.

Doc.

Re: calling all mamils - cycling advice
Well done on getting a place! I did it in 2014, despite the absolutely torrential rain it still remains as the best time I've had on a bike.

I'm semi serious and get through about 1500 miles a year. I started with Map My Ride and then moved to Strava. Strava is significantly better IMO.

I've never used a Garmin or anything to track my speed and other stats with i.e. a power meter. Not sure I would want to as I just want to enjoy cycling and have nothing else to focus on other than the road ahead of me. I know others who swear by their Garmins and Power meters - it's just not for me.

Strava is the best for tracking.

You will need to buy a garmin. Please message me if you want as I'm a saddo mamil too.
